Alice Neel in New Jersey and Vermont

An exhibition exploring Alice Neel's paintings executed outside New York, in New Jersey and Vermont is on show at Xavier Hufkens, Brussels until 15 December 2018. Featuring twenty one paintings made between 1952 and 1984 the exhibition suggests how a sense of place informed Neel's practice. Landscape and portraits co-mingle in a show which has a strong sense of nature, both nature tamed and nature at large. With some paintings executed in her garden in Spring Lake and others painted before the grand mountain vistas of Vermont this exhibition explores a hitherto neglected side of Neel's art.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Jeremy Lewison and Philip Larratt-Smith
